The north Norfolk coast‘s wide open beaches contrast with Suffolk’s rockier coastal cliffs but both offer a relaxing unspoilt environment popular with retirees and second home owners. Inland Norfolk and North Suffolk are a great hunting ground for buyers seeking farmsteads and acreage at very reasonable prices, within easy reach of Norwich’s old streets of restaurants, upmarket boutiques and impressive leisure facilities.

 

South Suffolk and North Essex have a sleepy feel and are rich in period houses, ancient villages and a good line in cosy pubs and great restaurants, being somewhat of a culinary hotspot these days. Bury St Edmunds is the standout town, blending facilities beyond its size with medieval streets and timbered buildings, whilst Stansted offers a quick and easy air hub for Europe. South Essex has a busier, more built-up feel with towns like Brentwood popular with commuters taking advantage of excellent fast train links to Liverpool Street.

 

Further around the M25, Hertfordshire is a small county which packs alot into its boundaries: no less than four very attractive towns in St Albans, Harpenden, Hitchin and Hertford (all with quick rail links in the capital and easy access to Luton airport) separated by some extremely pretty rolling countryside which in a few pockets feels more like the Dales than the south-east.

 

Cambridgeshire‘s rural areas are notable for their flat geography and small villages rich with pretty period properties and offering a blend of good schooling, friendly active communities and easy access to Cambridge and London by car via the M11, and by train to Liverpool Street or Kings Cross. Cambridge itself is of course most famous for its university, comprising 31 colleges which occupy many of the breathtaking period gems in the City centre. But it’s also a thriving, endlessly fascinating cultural centre that’s easily accessible on foot or by the ubiquitous bicycle, the standard and well-served mode of transport.
