Outside of London there is perhaps more artistically happening in Cornwall than any other county in England. As pretty as a picture it’s not surprising that the town attracted nineteenth century sea and landscape artists who put St Ives on the map for future generations of artists and sculptors.
St Ives’ charm lies in its pretty harbour and delightful shopping streets which meander uphill with plenty of fascinating window displays on the way to temp you inside.
Sitting above Porthmeor Beach is the elegant Tate St Ives gallery, which opened in 1993 and offers a programme of changing exhibitions. Renowned sculptress Barbara Hepworth also lived and worked in St Ives and a Museum and Garden dedicated to her work is open during the summer and autumn months.
For centuries the harbour has been the focal point of the town and still today acts like a magnet to both locals and holiday visitors. There are also numerous golden beaches to choose from including Town Beach and Porthminster both with restaurant and café facilities nearby.
Having been voted best holiday resort in the UK on several occasions there is always a strong demand for holiday property in St Ives. However, with it’s own fishing fleet and popular local events there remains a strong community which welcomes new comers particularly if they have an appreciation of the arts.
